Considerations for Selecting a Cosmetic Packaging Container

Understanding what category the bulk falls under will help to guide what container is best suited for your product.

Bulk is the generic name for products inside a cosmetic packaging container. There are many categories in the skin care industry like lotion, cream, serum, foundation, oils, and many more. Each category comes with different consistencies, like runny or thick, and some contain beads – such as scrubs and exfoliators.

Understanding what category the bulk falls under will help to guide what container is best suited for your product. Exfoliators and thick bulks are typically packaged in a jar or squeeze tube container. Lotion and cream which has low to medium consistency can be found in glass or plastic bottle containers with pump closures. Oils and serum have traditionally been packaged in dropper bottles.

Bulk type also must be considered when selecting dispensing mechanism. Closures such as pumps, droppers, screw caps, flip-tops, and sprayers are some of many dispensing options in the skin care packaging. Understanding bulk limitations will guide what packaging can be used, as well as what is the intended experience between consumer and product. Pump dispensing are single finger actuations that provide measured dosing with little to no mess-clean-up. Screw caps involve a ritual of unscrewing cap and retrieving the desired amount. Flip-top closures provide the convenience of single hand open and dispense.

Bulk sensitivity and protection are other considerations to take into account. Some bulks need protection from air and UV and other bulks will react to the container. Bulk categories need different levels of protection. Container material and color can provide barriers for UV damage and airtight containers do just that - keep air away from bulk. Inverse situations can occur as well, where the container needs protection from bulk. Ingredients in bulk can have an adverse effect on container if not compatible. Glass and PP are suited for aggressive bulks that may contain peptides, SPF and retinol amongst others. Decorations on container may also need protection, for example silk screen and some labels are susceptible to damage, a UV coat and clear coat layer respectively can be used for protection.
 
The path to a successful product launch requires work and planning all along the way. Understanding the benefits and drawbacks of bulk can help remove some of the hurdles and roadblocks along the way.
